Methodology

How we rank

How we evaluate fragrance alternatives, confidence, and retailer links.

01

The short version

What this page is for

Dupologist helps you discover fragrance alternatives, similar scents, and same-vibe options — affordable routes to the impression a more expensive bottle leaves, with the trade-offs made clear. We evaluate fragrance alternatives using scent profile similarity, available evidence, price context, and product availability. Some retailer links may earn us a commission, but commission does not determine recommendation labels on its own.

Every recommendation on this site carries a label, a confidence level, and evidence tags. The sections below explain where each of those comes from, how we make money, and where our data runs out — so you can judge how much weight to put on any single match.

02

Labels

What the recommendation labels mean

Each label is assigned once per set, so a page never claims two closest matches. A label describes what an option does well — not that it replaces the original. Here is what you will see, with a live example of how each one renders on a result card:

Closest match
The option in this set with the strongest confirmed note overlap with the original. It does not mean identical — even a close match will differ in the opening or drydown — but the shared structure is the most defensible we can show you.
Best value
Lowest cost per millilitre among the options that still fit the scent profile. Value here means the math, not a judgement about quality.
Same vibe
Reads similarly in the room without trying to reproduce the original's structure. Useful when you want the same impression, not a reconstruction.
Better longevity
Community reports put wear time above the rest of the set at this price. Based on consensus for the house, not a measurement of this specific bottle.
Softer alternative
Quieter projection — the same idea at conversation distance rather than filling a room. Often the better call for office or close-range wear.
Sample first
Not a ranking label, but a flag. When confidence reads Medium or Low, we suggest a decant or travel size before a full bottle. It is the single habit that removes most of the risk in this category.
03

Confidence

What confidence means

Confidence is our honest read on how much weight to put behind a match. It combines note overlap, the evidence we can show, and whether we hold community consensus for the house behind the product. It is not a promise of accuracy — it is a calibration of certainty.

High confidence
Strong note overlap with the original plus several supporting signals — a readable retailer price, community reporting for the house, and a listing detailed enough to trust. A full bottle is a reasonable risk.
Medium confidence
The scent family and several notes line up, but something is missing — thin listing detail, no consensus for the house, or an unstated concentration. Worth a sample before a full bottle.
Low confidence
A directional lead. The match rests mostly on family and vibe, and we show it only when it is the honest best available. Expect differences; sample first, and do not treat it as a substitution.
04

Evidence

What the evidence tags mean

Evidence tags show what a confidence judgement actually rests on. A match with only one tag is labelled "Limited evidence" so it cannot quietly borrow authority. Here are the tags, shown the same way they appear on a result card:

Note overlap
The retailer's listing states notes or accords that match the original's profile. The more of the original's structure a listing covers, the stronger this signal.
Community-cited
We hold a compiled consensus for this house — what wearers commonly report about longevity, projection, and how the scent behaves. It is paraphrased and attributed, never a rating we invented.
Retailer-listed
The product is currently listed as in stock by at least one retailer we can link to, with a price we can read.
Price-verified
The price shown came back from the retailer's own product data at the moment the page loaded, not from a cached table we maintain.
Limited evidence
We could not establish much beyond the listing itself. Treat the match as a lead worth sampling rather than a recommendation with weight behind it.

Commissions

How commissions work

Some retailer links on this site earn us a commission when you buy through them. The price you pay is the retailer's normal price; the commission comes out of the retailer's margin, not your total. The commerce layer that reads live retailer inventory and pricing is powered by Channel3.

Commission helps support the site, but it does not set the ranking. Ordering comes from note overlap first, then price and the evidence we can actually show you. We do not weight results by payout rate, we do not accept payment to raise a confidence level, and we will show a "Limited evidence" match above a better-paying one when that is the honest answer. When nothing in stock meets our filtering, we show nothing.

06

Sponsored

How sponsored placements would be labeled

We do not currently run sponsored placements. If we ever do, they will be labeled in plain language, given their own visual treatment, and kept out of the ranked organic set entirely — never mixed in, never reordering an organic result, never counted as a match. An example of that label:

07

Limits

Data limits and uncertainty

Scent is subjective, and product data can be incomplete. Retailer listings vary in quality: concentration and bottle size are often unstated, which is why you will see "Not stated" rather than a guess, and why price per millilitre appears only when the size is given.

Availability, pricing, reformulations, and note listings can all change over time. Longevity and projection ranges paraphrase community consensus for a house, not lab measurement of a specific bottle — skin chemistry moves them considerably. Prices and stock are read when the page loads and can shift within minutes, so always confirm on the retailer's page before buying.

Treat lower-confidence matches as exploratory. A "Low" reading is a direction to sample, not a substitution you can buy blind.

FAQ

Questions we get

Do you ever call something an exact clone?

No. Even a High-confidence alternative differs in the opening and again in the drydown, because expensive naturals are usually where cheaper compositions substitute. We use precise language — close alternative, similar scent profile, same vibe — and reserve judgement for the evidence we can actually show you.

Can a match earn a 'Closest match' label just because it pays well?

No. The label is assigned to the listing with the strongest note overlap in the current in-stock set, full stop. Commission is not a signal in the ranking, and we will show a 'Limited evidence' match above a better-paying one when that is the honest answer.

Why do prices and stock sometimes change between visits?

We read live retailer data when a page loads. A retailer can change a price, sell out, or relist within minutes — so we always show the price and stock at page-load time and encourage you to confirm on the retailer's page before buying.

Where do the longevity and projection numbers come from?

They paraphrase community consensus for a house, not a lab measurement of a specific bottle. Skin chemistry, batch, and storage all move them considerably — treat the ranges as a rough guide, not a guarantee.

What happens when nothing in stock fits the original?

We show nothing. We do not pad a page with weak matches or the original house's own bottles, samples, and decants. An empty result is an honest result.

Our goal

To help people avoid bad blind buys and find better-value fragrance options — with more context and transparency than a random smells-like list, and less hype than a coupon site.
